When I go back through my work I find a number of pieces that are centred around birds, feathers or insects. This must be influenced by my daily ritual of sitting with my cup of tea on the verandah in silence, immersing myself in the sounds and songs of the native birdlife that abound and engaging in idle chit chat with my visiting feathered friends. One of the most amazing sights was an explosion of thousands of butterflies and dragonflies bursting to life and flying out of surrounding bushland within 24 hours of Cyclone Marcia that came through the Capricorn Coast in 2015. Forced to do nothing but lie down on the couch outside due to a week without power along with paralysing heat, it was a time to sit back and notice the little things that surround us.
